BOTOX® Cosmetic has been established as one of the safest and most effective ways in eliminating the fine lines in the upper face. It is one of the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic treatments available; treating close to 3 to 4 patients a day. It is most often used for 3 areas; the horizontal “worry” lines of the forehead, the vertical “angry” lines between the eyebrows, and the fine “crows feet” lines around the eyes. The miracle of BOTOX® Cosmetic is that it provides a nonsurgical option to problems the plastic surgeon often used to operate on.
Frequently Asked Questions About Botox®
Are Botox® Injections Painful and how much Time does it take?
There is a small amount of pain due to the injections. However, it is often described as a “bug bite” and most patients find the discomfort to be minimal and very brief. Dentists can also numb the injection sites with an anesthetic cream or cold pack and the patient will feel virtually nothing. For those that are uncomfortable with these options, Dublin Dental Center has alternative Solutions available.
Every patient is different but most can be treated within 10 to 30 minutes. The time required is usually based on the number of injections needed.
When Does the Patient begin to Experience Results?
Most patients will begin to experience positive results from Botox® treatments within 24 to 48 hours. Some patients may require an extra day or two. There will be some slight muscle tenderness but it will dissipate very quickly. Cosmetically, wrinkles will begin to disappear in the same time frame and may continue to diminish up to one week after treatment. Improvements can be seen for up to a month as new skin cells will regenerate and the older cells will be replaced.
Botox® will not make a patient look twenty years younger but in clinical trials the vast majority (approximately 90%) of men and women described their appearance as moderate or better. A small number of people stated that there was no significant change in their wrinkles.
Are there any Risks, Limitations, or Side Effects?
All medical procedures have some risk. Botox® injections have proven to be very safe and effective as a non-surgical treatment. The injection site may exhibit some mild bruising or redness but it should be very short term. The patient should not rub or massage the injection sites to avoid spreading the Botox® to other tissue areas. The patient should also remain upright after treatment for a number of hours and should limit his or her physical activity during this period.
Complications from Botox® treatments are usually infrequent, temporary, and minimal. Some of the commonly reported side effects are temporary eyelid droop, nausea, flu syndrome, and headaches. Less frequently reported side effects include pain, bruising, muscle weakness, and redness at the injection site.
Women should avoid Botox® treatments during pregnancy and lactation.
